EPE Project - Holiday Bungalows

Everything started with a dream.

We dreamed something, that is eco-friendly, that has enough space for your family, that has a good value with a good price. We dreamed a place, where you can spend your holiday in peace. How can we achieve it? We believe there are some essentials, that are necessary for it: the living place and the environment. In the woods of EPE, an area in the Netherlands, also in a national park, it is close to almost always quiet. The environment was given, we had to create the perfect living space. We had such idea, that if we make a house, a lodge, or bungalow, it must be the part of the environment. So our designers started their work, how can we fit a modern, well equipped bungalow in the true natural habitat. The colours took quite a heavy-liftin in this task, the outer colour resembles the bark, the lighter wood the inner part of a tree. Perfect harmony with the nature. The next step was to figure out how we can put the nature element in the interior. The first thing came in our minds was light. Why don’t we design in a way, that will let the natural light became the primary light source? We did. The architect team took the opportunity, and planned with the sunlight. Best for the eyes, best for relaxation, best for ergonomics. When the Sun is off-duty, we use LEDs, they provide great efficiency, and with bringing them up, we can talk about the technological side of the story.

The technological side of the project.

The goal was to make the lodges relatively cheap to heat and cool, to make them sustainable. The trick to reach this goal was the insulation. The bungalows are assembled from pre-produced wall modules and panels. The base of these modules are steel frames, which provides the necessary structural strength. In the frame, the wiring and glass wool take place, then the frames are closed with OSB and EPS, creating a wall panel. These wall panels are usually quite different. Different dimensions, which means different weight. Some have windows, some have wires and outlets. Their transport is not always an easy task, but with the help of subcontractors and logistics companies, it can be done without any issues. Our Workshop in located in Hungary, while the construction site is at EPE, Netherlands. This means a 2-3 days route for the truckers, depending on road conditions it may change. At the same time, at the construction site our local team is working on the foundation of the buildings.

When the truck arrives at site, the foundations were already finished. First task is to unload the truck as soon as possible, we do not want to keep the driver waiting for no reason. Thanks to our custom transport cages and skilled forklift drivers, this can be done in short time. The construction team separates the walls according to house numbers, then later assembles them to form the houses. Don’t get fooled by this sentence, it is not even close for being this simple.

Assembling a bungalow is not just screwing the walls on the foundation or screwing them together. Accurate measurement, preparations are necessary. The foundation is already done, so the team prepares the machines and materials. One key element in the structural work is the crane, which is used to lift the wall-panels. These panels can weight more than 400kg, so the crane is mandatory.

It saves us time and human strength for later. The wall-panels are screwed down on the foundation, and screwed to each other. Screws provide much stronger connections compared to nails, making the structure much more stable. When the walls are holding, the roof element will be the next part of the construction. Installing it is no different from the previous process, the crane lifts it, the team screws it. Only difference is, that the roof will need waterproofing.

The structure is ready, time for the exterior works, including the extra insulation, sealing, later the painting. Interior-wise, the wiring, piping, connecting every technical part are the ones that take more time. The next step is the interior decoration, which includes the installation of appliances and furnishing the whole building. When every detail is done, we do a last test if everything works as it should, and if it does, then we move on to the next lodge. One of these Logdes is already done, The Showbungalow. With this modular construction method we will be able to build around 100 holiday lodges in this harmonical environment.
